June promises to be a month of celebrations for all the wrong reasons. On June 6, millions will celebrate Atheists Day. I looked up what an Atheist is. My thought was that they did not believe in God. But no, that's not it. If they did not believe in God, that would mean there was a God that they choose not to believe in. Atheists are supposedly not about a belief or a religion. They basically say they do not believe in any god. It is the concept that they are free from the confines that accompany belief. They go so far as to say that no one has the right to describe who an Atheist is except for an Atheist.

There are really very few Atheists. I think more people would probably say they are Agnostics. An Agnostic is one who doubts an existence in, and if there is one, wants nothing to do with a god. Any type of god.

The founder of American Atheists and one of the most famous of all Atheists was Madalyn Murray O'hair. In 1963, she used her son in a court case to outlaw prayer in schools. She went on fighting and in 1993, she helped get bible reading in schools stopped. She was known as one who had little to no patience with anyone who believed in God. Her son Bill was so hated by other students for his mother's stance that he had to be protected because other children tried to push him in front of the school bus each day. While his other was busy publishing articles, and fundraising, Bill felt he was fighting for his life.

American Atheists has little to do with religion. They are a group that was developed as a "nationwide movement which defends the civil rights of non-believers, works for the separation of church and state and addresses issues of the First Amendment public policy." O'Hair went on to file several lawsuits that she felt violated the United States Constitution in the separation of church and state. Madalyn also formed a radio program for the American Atheists that was carried on more than 140 cable television systems.

In one of her arguments in court, (Murray vs. Curlett) she wrote:

"Your petitioners are atheists, and they define their lifestyle as follows. An atheist loves himself and his fellow man instead of a god. An atheist accepts that heaven is something for which we should work now – here on earth – for all men together to enjoy. An atheist accepts that he can get no help through prayer, but that he must find in himself the inner conviction and strength to meet life, to grapple with it, to subdue it and to enjoy it. An atheist accepts that only in a knowledge of himself and a knowledge of his fellow man can he find the understanding that will help lead to a life of fulfillment."

My sarcasm wants to ask the question -"And how's that working for you America?"

Although Madalyn O'Hair was kidnapped and murdered at age 77, the movement is still strong throughout the United States. Today, the American Atheists are very active in all states, and are constantly finding reasons to fight against God in politics, schools, and business. Their homepage advertises their involvement with everything from Pledge of Allegiance Issues in Florida to filing lawsuits against bakeries, and funding of abortion.

The voice coming against the American Atheist movement is getting quieter throughout the years. Agnostics, who really don't care about anything to do with God remain silent, and many Christians are too busy or lazy to care. Only a few, like Franklin Graham take a stand on behalf of Christians against the American Atheist movement.

Sometimes, I feel helpless against all that is going on. But I am offering a solution this Atheists Day. If you are a Christian, I am encouraging you to pray this June 6. Pray for Christians around the world that are being persecuted. Pray for lawmakers that are taking a stand against the policies being vomited out of Washington, DC. Pray for the safety of Franklin Graham, and others who stand in support of the voice of freedom for Christianity. And last, pray for Our God to intervene where we can't on behalf of those who are out there on the front lines.

We can make a difference. Remember Bill Murray O'hair? Today, he is a baptist minister, social conservative lobbyist and serves as the Chairman of the National Freedom Coalition. Although his mother commented that his conversion was like a Postnatal abortion to her and announce that he is beyond human forgiveness, Mr. Murray can rest assured that it is (thankfully) not her forgiveness he needed, and he made the choice of life.
