6 Detained in Connection with Walmart Shooting

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Richland County deputies have detained six people in connection with Tuesday afternoon's shooting at a Columbia Walmart.Richland County deputies say they pulled over a car early Tuesday evening that appeared to match the one involved in the incident, which took place at the Walmart on Garners Ferry Road around 4:30 p.m. It's unclear if the people inside the vehicle are facing charges at this time.

Officer Jennifer Timmons with the Columbia Police Department said that from what investigators have been able to determine, the victim was shot in the lower body near the marketplace entrance of the store. The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment. No one else was hurt.

Timmons says it appears some vehicles in the parking lot may have been hit by gunfire as well.

There's no word yet on what led up to the shooting, but officers police did say this is what they describe as an "isolated incident." The store was closed, but has since reopened.

"All of a sudden there was a bunch of screaming and running, everybody was running and screaming," said Cindy Corpus, who was inside the store shopping. "The alarms started going off in the store and they started making the announcement for everybody to go to the back of the store, so the ones that were closer to the front just went out to the front and a lot of them went from the front to the back."

"This is a public place, children come here, elderly people come here, and this is the last thing that we need in the City of Columbia," Timmons said. "We need people to come forward with information."

Anyone with details about this shooting should call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
