United Nations Group Sponsors Rainbow Crosswalk Outside UN During High-Level General Assembly Meetin
A crosswalk across from the United Nations complex in New York has been painted the colors of the rainbow in time for the General Assembly High-Level Week, which started Monday.
President Obama and other world leaders meeting at the UN will walk the rainbow path, a reminder of the importance of LGBT rights.

The crosswalk, dubbed the #path2equality, was commissioned by the UN’s LGBT Core Group, a cross-regional committee that works for the advancement of LGBT rights. It’s located at the intersection of 46th Street and First Avenue and will be in place at least through September 24.

“All through High-Level Week… world leaders, ministers, and even heads of state walk into the UN this way, and they will cross the crosswalk and hopefully many of them will know and will appreciate the spirit in which it has been laid down,” said UN ambassador Samantha Power. “It’s a historic event for the City of New York. I don’t think anything like it has been done, even on Pride Day. And it’s historic for the United Nations and for the cause of human rights.”
