RNC chief Reince Priebus named Trump’s chief of staff

Reince Priebus, the man who navigated treacherous GOP political waters over the last two years to emerge with a victorious presidential candidate, will be the new White House chief of staff, the Trump transition team announced Sunday.

President-elect Donald Trump also said Steve Bannon, the former head of Breitbart News who helped stabilize the Trump campaign, will be his senior counselor and strategist.

“Steve and Reince are highly qualified leaders who worked well together on our campaign and led us to a historic victory,” Mr. Trump said. “Now I will have them both with me in the White House as we work to make America great again.”

Mr. Priebus spent years rebuilding the Republican National Committee’s elections operation after disastrous losses in 2008 and 2012. He managed to tame the presidential debate process, pulled off a successful convention against strong headwinds, and built a turnout operation that some analysts have credited with helping Mr. Trump over the finish line Tuesday.

His selection, however, is likely to anger some in the tea party wing of the GOP, who thought Mr. Priebus didn’t do enough to shape the party ideologically during his time as chairman of the RNC, and who say he’s too much of a Washington figure to help Mr. Trump.
