Jeopardy asks contestants about 'xem/xyrs/xemself' neopronouns

On Monday evening’s episode of Jeopardy, a question regarding "neopronouns" appeared on the board.

During the Tournament of Champions quarterfinal, Cris Pannullo selected the category "Speech! Parts of Speech!" for $600.

Pannullo was shown the words "Xem, Xyrs, Xemself," to which Pannullo responded, "What are pronouns."

“What are pronouns?” host Ken Jennings replied. “What are ‘neopronouns.’ You have $6,200.”

In a 2022 New York Times piece titled "A Guide to Neopronouns," such a term is defined as "a word created to serve as a pronoun without expressing gender."

Examples of such include "ze" and "zir," and can also include so-called "noun-self pronouns" such as "bun/bunself" and "fae/faer/faeself."

The piece cited a survey by the Trevor Project of 40,000 LGBTQ young people at the time which found that just four percent used neopronouns.Pannollo’s win on the question wasn’t enough to win and move up in the championships, losing to Jared Watson, per the Washington Times.
