Nearly 3.3 million Americans filed for unemployment last week as the global coronavirus pandemic grinds the U.S. economy to a halt.
The previous unemployment low came in October of 1982, when 695,000 Americans filed for unemployment. The stunning numbers also mark a 1500% increase over the past two weeks.
The surging unemployment claims could lead to increased calls for Americans to go back to work, as frustration and uncertainty mount with the status quo.
President Donald Trump said during a virtual Fox News town hall earlier this week that his goal was to have the economy back up and running by Easter.
“I will tell you that right now. [Easter is] such an important day for other reasons, but I will make it an important day for this. I would love to have the country opened up, and they are just raring to go, by Easter,” Trump said.
