Portland Antifa claims responsibility for attack on woke butcher shop in solidarity with 'antispecieist' activists

On Sunday, a blog associated with Portland's Rose City Antifa issued a claim of responsibility for an attack launched on a butcher shop in northeast Portland.

The owner of the butcher shop, Pasture PDX, voiced left-leaning political views on social media, and the shop displaying an LGBTQ Pride flag on its storefront windows.

The attack was launched to stand in solidarity with anarchist "antispeciesist" activists who have been imprisoned for carrying out radical attacks to liberate animals from so-called captivity, according to the blog post.

Rose City Antifa, under the byline "rosecitycounterinfo," said in the post that they shut off power to Pasture PDX in an attempt to make their animal meat unsellable. The group also claims to have shut power to nearby stores for no other reason other than "it was fun."

"Last night we cut off the tiny padlock to the breaker box of a butcher shop 'pasture pdx' and shut off their power to make the flesh they butchered unsellable. we also sealed the lock on the door with spray foam insulation. We also shut power to two adjacent stores because it was fun. These things are easily reproduceable and we encourage anarchists to think outside of the box. you can do other things then smash windows," the post reads.

"we dedicate this act to Jack, the Susaron 4 comrades in chile, and all antispeciesists who have been put in cages. for total freedom!" the group concluded.

It's unclear what other stores were targeted.

Pasture PDX, which is a butcher shop/restaurant, was established in 2022 and is most famous for its sandwiches.

HJ Schaible, who co-owns the business alongside Kei Ohdera, has publicly expressed left-leaning political views on social media. In June 2020 during the height of the Antifa/BLM riots across the nation in response to the death of George Floyd, the co-owner shared a Facebook post that criticized people denouncing property destruction as an example of white privilege.

Schaible's profile picture on Facebook features him in front of his shop. An LGBTQ rainbow Pride flag can be seen displayed on the storefront window along with the words "This is a safe space."

The shop's co-owner, Kei Ohdera, was featured in a piece by The Oregonian in November 2023, to explain that their butcher shop was established to provide ethically sourced high-quality meat. Ohdera also said that they do their best to encourage people to consume less meat.

"We are trying our best to suggest that people shouldn't eat as much meat as they do, but if they do choose to eat meat, eat meat that is coming from the right sources raised by stewards of the land," Ohdera told the paper.

It's unclear how much damage was done to the store.
