Despite a widespread acceptance of the results of the 2024 presidential election, about one in 10 Democrats – or 9 percent – thought President-elect Donald Trump’s stunning victory was illegitimate, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll that overall shows Americans more content with their electoral system and its results than they have been for several elections.
Even though there are doubts from some Dems and the burst of Trump Derangement Syndrome in the day after the election on social media with some supporters of Kamala Harris looking like they were ready for a padded room and the usual pushback from the usual suspects on The View, the mass protests anticipated by some have not happened, CNN noted.
An overwhelming 94 percent of voters agreed that Trump’s election victory was legitimate, according to Reuters/Ipsos. Of those 94 percent, 30 percent say they can’t support his presidency but nonetheless believe he won it fairly. Only about 6 percent of registered voters say they refuse to accept Trump’s win.
After the 2020 presidential election, voters were a lot less certain that President Joe Biden had won without cheating, with 60 percent of voters agreeing that he was a legitimate president, a Quinnipiac University poll found. Republican voters overwhelmingly rejected the results, with 70 percent denying that Biden had won fairly. Many Republican voters cast their ballots on November 5 firmly believing that Democrats had cheated to gain control of the White House.
Harris’ concession speech might also have had a calming effect, as she did not encourage four years of resistance to Trump’s presidency. "And we did it with the knowledge that we all have so much more in common than what separates us. Now, I know folks are feeling and experiencing a range of emotions right now. I get it, but we must accept the results of this election," she said.
"Earlier today, I spoke with President-elect Trump and congratulated him on his victory. I also told him that we will help him and his team with their transition, and that we will engage in a peaceful transfer of power."
