1 officer dead after gunman opens fire inside Chicago hospital, suspect in custody

An active shooter situation took place on Saturday at Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital in the Lincoln Square neighborhood of Chicago, leaving one police officer dead and another critically injured.
Alderman Andre Vasquez posted on social media that the "active situation" developed at around 11:30 am at Swedish Hospital and the 2600 block of W Winona, where multiple shots were fired and two officers were shot.
Police and SWAT teams were dispatched to the hospital on Saturday morning. According to WGN-TV, sources said the incident took place when officers were transporting a prisoner either to or from the hospital. A WGN-TV reporter also confirmed that an image circulating on social media of a naked man fleeing the scene is the suspect.
Following the incident, hospital officials released a statement:
“An individual in custody of law enforcement was brought in to Swedish Hospital Emergency Department for treatment at approximately 9:00a.m on Saturday April 25, 2026. In accordance with Endeavor Health public safety weapon detection protocols, this individual was wanded upon arrival. He was escorted by law enforcement at all times. The individual later fired shots at the law enforcement officers and exited the hospital building. He was apprehended and remains in custody. No team members or patients were physically harmed as a result of this incident. The safety of our patients and team members remains our top priority. We are cooperating with law enforcement during their investigation and our deepest compassion remains with the officers and their families.“
Law enforcement confirmed that the suspect was taken into custody around noon after a manhunt took place. One officer was pronounced dead, while the injured officer was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
In a press conference on Saturday afternoon, Chicago police confirmed that officers transported a patient to the hospital at around 10:50 am for observation when they were shot. The deceased officer was 38 years old. Chicago police declined to release the names of the officers, citing privacy reasons for their families.
