Storm of CENTURY hits Britain: UK on RED alert as Storm Jonas poses 'danger to life'

The army has been put on standby as swathes of the country brace for up to eight inches of rain - a month’s worth - to fall over the next 48 hours.

People have been warned to stay away from coastal paths and walkways as strong winds send huge waves tumbling over sea defences.

The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings for another three inches of rain across northern, western and southern regions tomorrow.

Dramatic photographs emerged of lorries being blown over by gale force gusts as huge waves pounded Britain's coastline.

Remnants of Storm Jonas, which has been dubbed the Storm of the Century coincide with high tides and has whipped up mammoth waves putting coastal regions on alert for flood chaos.

The west bore the brunt of the hammering which crippled transport networks and closed schools while a man was injured after a chimney was blown through a bus window in Edinburgh.

It spells renewed misery for parts of the country still reeling from Christmas floods although nowhere will escape unsettled weather this week.

The Environment Agency (EA) warned of a possible ‘danger to life’ and travel disruption issuing 14 alerts and three more serious warnings.

Forecasters warn the storm will continue to lash Britain through today with another powerful system due before the weekend.

The Met Office has issued further severe weather warnings for four inches of rain - half a month’s worth - on Friday.

Residents of the Cumbrian village of Glenridding have been drenched by the rain again, with the vilage seeing flooding for the fourth time this winter.

The Lake District village was flooded three times in December, and on Tuesday businesses were hit once again and schools sent children home.

The owners of the Glenridding hotel said on Facebook: “We are feeling very emotional here as we are receiving the full brunt of the water yet again.

"Feeling devastated, tired and defeated."
