Coming soon: a Turkish-Saudi offensive in Syria?

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu announced today (Saturday) that his country could join Saudi Arabia soon in a military operation against the Islamic state terror organization in Syria. At the same time according to some reports Turkey has started to bomb Kurdish-controlled areas in Aleppo.

The Turkish minister attended a Security Conference in Munich and said that Saudi Arabia is "ready to send planes and soldiers to the Incirlik Airbase", according to "Yenisafak" newspaper. "At every coalition meeting we have always emphasized the need for an extensive result-oriented strategy in the fight against the Islamic state terrorist group," he added.

Yesterday (Friday) world powers agreed on an outline for a ceasefire in Syria. US Secretary of State John Kerry said in a press conference: “I am pleased to announce that we also achieved progress on the humanitarian issue and also regarding the cessation of fighting. We have here the potential to change the daily lives of Syrian civilians only if the agreement will be implemented in full.” Kerry added that the humanitarian delegations will be strengthened and noted that the UN aims to establish a team to monitor the warring parties in Syria in order to permit access to areas where civilians are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.
