5 people charged over shooting of Indiana judge, wife in their home

Five people have been taken into custody following the shooting of an Indiana judge and his wife at their Lafayette residence, authorities have said. The judge, as well as his wife, survived the attack with injuries. 

Tippecanoe Superior Court Judge Steven Meyer and his wife, Kimberly Meyer, were shot and injured during the attack at their home on Mill Pond Lane on Sunday afternoon, according to the Lafayette Police Department. Both victims were hospitalized from the injuries but were in stable condition after the attack.

There were five total suspects taken into custody: Raylen Ferguson, 38; Thomas Moss, 43; Blake Smith, 32; Amanda Milsap, 45; and Zenada Greer, 61. Ferguson, Moss, and Smith were all charged with attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, as well as other counts. Milsap and Greer were hit with charges of assisting a criminal and obstruction of justice, per NBC News.

Police responded to the residence shortly after 2 pm on Sunday after receiving reports of shots fired. Officers found the couple inside the home suffering from injuries consistent with gunfire. Investigators said Judge Meyer was struck in the arm, while his wife sustained a wound to her hip. Multiple shell casings were discovered at the scene.

By Monday evening, investigators confirmed that five individuals were believed to be involved in the shooting and a manhunt ensued, leading to the arrests. While a motive has not been officially disclosed, one of the suspects charged with attempted murder had been set to go before the judge in a separate trial just days after the shooting.

Tippecanoe County Sheriff Robert Goldsmith said additional security measures would remain in place at the county courthouse as a precaution while the case moves forward.

Judge Meyer said in a statement, “I am so grateful for the outpouring of support from friends, the community, court colleagues, and law enforcement. I want to express my heartfelt thanks to my medical team. I am receiving excellent care and I am improving. Kim is also deeply appreciative for the community support, and she too is healing.”
