Activists plan to create 'human chain' to protest Trump's threat to demolish Kennedy Center
An organization called Hands off the Arts announced it plans to create a "human chain" around the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts to protest President Donald Trump's threat to demolish the building.
“Hands Off the Arts is organizing a rally Sept. 18 against the president’s defacing of JFK’s memorial, his removal and censorship of art, and the threat to demolish the center if he can’t remake the site in his image,” the group said in a statement.
The event is planned to begin at 6:30 p.m. on the Kennedy Center steps, and there will be "musical performances, testimonials from current and former employees, along with other special guest speakers,” the Washington Blade reported.
A federal judge on Thursday ordered that the government must give 30 days notice should it decide to demolish the Kennedy Center. The decision from U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper also saw him decline to grant an emergency review of the board's decision to close for renovations, The Hill reported.
The center suffered a partial ceiling collapse earlier this year and Trump has warned that the entire building could face demolition without his aid.
Since returning to the White House, Trump has sought to overhaul and renovate the center, including by replacing the entire board, which then voted to add his name to the building.
