Authorities have charged two minor boys, ages 12 and 15, with the murder and robbery of a 33-year-old convenience store employee in Portland, Oregon. The incident occurred on December 9 at 3D's Market in the Hazelwood neighborhood. Santi Ram Rai, the victim, was gunned down during a robbery, according to police.
The Multnomah County Medical Examiner's Office ruled Rai's death a homicide caused by a gunshot wound. The two alleged suspects were identified by Portland Police detectives following a month-long investigation, KOIN News reported.
On Wednesday, authorities arrested a 12-year-old boy and a 15-year-old boy in a Portland neighborhood. The 12-year-old suspect has been charged with first-degree murder, while the 15-year-old faces second-degree murder. Both are also charged with robbery and additional related offenses, such as unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a stolen firearm, and possession of a stolen motor vehicle stemming from a separate criminal incident in neighboring Vancouver, Washington.
The investigation reportedly involved evidence such as surveillance footage from the store, cell phone data, shell casings, and clothing matches linking the suspects to the crime scene. "We extend our deepest condolences to the family, loved ones, and coworkers of Santi whose life was tragically taken," Portland Police Chief Bob Day, Mayor Kieth Wilson, and Community Safety Director Stephanie Howard said in a press release.
"This loss has profoundly impacted the Southeast Portland community," officials continued. "The arrest of two juveniles, ages 12 and 15, in connection with this homicide is a sobering reminder of the devastating reach of gun violence and the urgent need for continued prevention and intervention, especially when young people are involved...We remain committed to seeking justice for the victim."
Rai was remembered as a valued member of the community, with loved ones noting his role in translating for the Bhutanese community, per KOIN News. The case remains under investigation, and authorities continue to seek any additional information.
