Capitol Police arrested a gunman near office buildings of the US Senate on Tuesday.
The armed man, who was reportedly carrying an AR-15, was taken into custody “in the park across from Union Station,” according to a Capitol Police statement.
“At this time we have no reason to believe there is an ongoing threat,” the statement read. “We are working to gather more information and will put out more details when they are confirmed.”
In a separate alert, officers alerted members, staff and press to the presence of a suspicious package “in the Upper Senate Park,” which is located directly north of the US Capitol building on the other side of Constitution Ave.
They advised all to avoid the area until further notice.
Tensions have remained high on the US Capitol complex following a pro-Palestinian rally in Washington, DC, on Saturday, during which tens of thousands of demonstrators marched and later swarmed the White House.
The protesters chanted “Allahu akbar” and “F–k Joe Biden,” calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip amid Israel’s war with Hamas terrorists.
They also pressed against the gates of the executive mansion and painted bloody handprints on its white brick, accusing the president of genocide for his administration’s ongoing support of the Jewish state.
