The 7-year-old boy shot at Joel Osteen's Lakewood Church on Sunday is not expected to survive. The child was injured by gunfire after his mother, Gennese Moreno, who previously identified as Jeffrey Moreno, entered the church and opened fire. Moreno was shot and killed by off-duty officers who were at the church.
The boy was shot in the head. Moreno had been in a custody dispute with her ex-huband's mother, who contested Moreno's custody. However, after the grandmother did not appear in court to fight for the child, Moreno was awarded custody. The boy's father is serving time in a Florida prison for neglecting to register as a sex-offender.
The boy was injured and taken to the hospital in critical condition. Now the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office has said that the child is not expected to survive the wounds sustained during that gun fire, reports the Houston Chronicle.
"The shooter has been identified as Genesse Ivonne Moreno, a 36-year-old who previously identified as Jeffrey Escalante," The Chronicle reported.
Moreno had posted about a child in her care on her Instagram page.
Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said the blame was on Moreno for having brought the child into harm's way, and for creating that harm.
"That female, that suspect put that baby in danger," Finner said. "I’m going to put that blame on her."
A 57-year-old man who was also injured is expected to survive. He was shot in the leg, or hip.
FBI agents have been searching a home in Conroe that they beleive is connected to Moreno. Moreno is reportedly from El Salvador.
