A Michigan newborn baby has been mauled to death by their family dog, police said. The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday morning, just five days after the baby was born.

Around 8:28 am, Novi police officers responded to the Oakland Glens Trailer Park located off 13 Mile Road and discovered an unresponsive baby girl with wounds consistent with a dog attack. The infant was transported to a local hospital and was quickly pronounced dead at arrival, authorities said.

The dog, described by police as mixed breed, has been taken into custody by the Oakland County Animal Control. Authorities will determine whether the canine is euthanized once the investigation is complete.

Police have not yet disclosed who was watching the baby at the time of her death. The baby's grandmother, Ellyn, who was not present during the attack, spoke to Fox 2 about the matter, detailing a conversation she had with her son, the baby's father.

"He came out briefly and told me the bassinet was there and the baby was asleep in it, and the dog, whom they raised around other kids, for some reason, knocked the bassinet over and killed the baby before they could get to them," she said. "He thinks the dog did it just to attack the baby. But the dog's been raised with - he's got other toddlers in there. So we don't know what actually happened other than the dog snapped out right in front of everyone."

Police have not yet filed any charges in this case, and it's unclear whether officers plan to do so. The investigation remains ongoing.
