The shooter who allegedly killed four people and wounded nine others at a Georgia high school on Wednesday has been identified as 14-year-old Colt Gray, authorities said.
Gray opened fire at Apalachee High School in Winder shortly before 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Chris Hosey told reporters Wednesday afternoon.
The gunman surrendered to police as soon as he was confronted by a school resource officer, Hosey said.
Hosey said the teen, who is a student at the school, would be charged with murder as an adult.
The campus was crowded with law enforcement vehicles from multiple agencies by 11 a.m.
At least two victims were evacuated from the scene via medical helicopter. Other casualties were treated for gunshot wounds at a local hospital.
Two of the dead were students, two were teachers, Hosey said.
The school building was evacuated and all the students were moved to the athletic stadium, where they were interviewed by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and reunited with their parents, 11Alive News reported.
The terrifying shooting went down just five weeks after Barrow County students returned to school on Aug 1.
Apalachee senior Sergio Caldera, 17, told ABC News that he was in chemistry class when he heard shots.
“My teacher goes and opens the door to see what’s going on. Another teacher comes running in and tells her to close the door because there’s an active shooter,” he said.
Caldera’s teacher locked the door and the students ran to the back of the room, he recalled.
He said they heard screams from outside as they huddled together.
At one point, Caldera said, someone banged on the classroom door and yelled “open up!” several times.
When the knocking stopped, Caldera heard more gunshots and screaming.
