Stu Phillips, a country music singer, broadcaster and longtime member of the Grand Ole Opry, died Christmas Day at age 92. He joined the Opry in 1967 and was its oldest-living member at the time of his death.
Born in 1933 near Montreal, Phillips began performing as a teenager and later hosted popular radio and television programs in Canada.
A No. 1 Canadian hit in 1965 led him to Nashville, where he recorded several U.S. country hits, including “Vin Rosé” and “Juanita Jones.”
Phillips remained active as an Opry performer for decades, hosted TV shows, toured internationally and became a U.S. citizen in 1998.
