Hispanic man in custody after driving car into crowd near migrant facility, killing 8, injuring 11

Authorities arrested a suspect that killed at least eight and injured 11 others on Sunday after his vehicle hit a crowd of people waiting at a bus stop in Brownsville, Texas.

According to police, the majority of victims killed and injured are immigrant men from Venezuela that were seeking services around 8:30 am at a Catholic charity in the border town of Brownsville. The charity acts as a shelter and provides assistance to migrants and homeless people, Axios reports. All eight people who were killed were migrants.

The suspect, who has not yet been identified, is a Hispanic male that was also injured in the crash and later transported to the hospital to be treated, according to police. He has been charged with reckless driving and police are awaiting toxicology reports. Local authorities told reporters they believe the attack was intentional.

Brownsville Police Investigator Martin Sandoval said at a press brief that video captured on surveillance cameras showed a Range Rover SUV run through a light and hit "people who were sitting there in the bus stop."

"The SUV flipped after hitting the curb and then hit the sidewalk further down the street," Malando said. "People walking on the sidewalk were also hit."

Brownsville, Texas is located directly across from Matamoros, Mexico along the US/Southern border and is a popular entry point for immigrants to cross into the United States.

This tragedy comes as the United States has experienced a mass influx of illegal immigrants flooding into the US due to the Biden administration's open border policies.

Illegal crossings have increased in recent months in anticipation of the looming expiration of Title 42, a Trump-era policy that expels illegal immigrants over health concerns. The policy expires on May 11.
