Japan set to next month restart world's largest nuke plant, Fukushima

Japan is set to next month to allow the world's largest nuclear power plant, Fukushima, to resume operations.

The country took a final step last week when regional officials approved the restarting of Fukushima nearly 15 years after the Fukushima disaster, marking the country's return to nuclear energy, according to Reuters. 

Kashiwazaki-Kariwa, about 136 miles northwest of Tokyo, was among 54 reactors shut after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami crippled the Fukushima Daiichi plant – in the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl, the wire service also reports.

Japan has since restarted 14 of the 33 that remain operable, as it tries to limit imported fossil fuels for energy. Kashiwazaki-Kariwa will be the first operated by Tokyo Electric Power Co, which ran the Fukushima plant, also according to Reuters.
