The Kansas City International Airport was evacuated on Sunday morning as authorities responded to unconfirmed reports of a “potential threat.”

Passengers were seen leaving the Missouri airport with their luggage in videos posted online as the situation unfolded. The FBI is reportedly on scene, though details about the threat remain unclear.

The Kansas City Aviation Department said at the time it was “aware of a situation at Kansas City International Airport."

“As a precaution, the department has evacuated sections of the Airport Terminal,” the department said. “Airport Police are working with the FBI to substantiate any potential threat.”

The airport still allowed arrivals, but no departures.  In an email to the Associated Press, an FBI spokesperson said that the bureau is "aware of the incident and our personnel are working with airport and law enforcement officials to determine the credibility of the threat.”

One passenger told the outlet that he was preparing to board a flight to Texas when he witnessed police and K-9 units. “Suddenly there was an airport worker saying ‘immediately evacuate,’ people got up fast and rushed out of there,” the witness said. He also noted that about 2,000 people were escorted out of the terminal to the tarmac.
