Karmelo Anthony, who was sentenced to 35 years in prison for fatally stabbing Austin Metcalf at a high school track meet, filed a notice of appeal on Wednesday.

The one-page notice was filed with the court in Collin County, Texas, and asks the court to appoint a lawyer, saying Anthony is unable to pay for one, according to ABC News

Anthony was transferred to the Wallace Pack Unit at a prison just outside Houston to begin his 35-year sentence.

Anthony was convicted by a jury in Collin County on Tuesday after a week-long trial. The jury determined that Anthony murdered Metcalf when he fatally stabbed him at a track meet in Frisco, Texas.

Witnesses said during the trial that Anthony and Metcalf had an altercation after the victim told Anthony he was sitting in the wrong area. The defense argued the stabbing was a case of self-defense because the defendant was protecting himself in the confrontation.
