Mamdani launches taxpayer-funded 'Parents' Night Out' babysitting program

Socialist New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is offering even more "free" taxpayer-funded programs, including a new pilot program that is meant to provide babysitting for parents who are looking to have a night out. Mamdani announced the "Parents' Night Out" program that will give free babysitting to parents on August 16 from 4 pm to 8 pm for up to 500 children. Registration for the program opened at 8 am on Monday July 13 and will run until July 20, with spots available on a first-come first-serve basis. "Every parent knows that a few hours to yourself can feel like a luxury," Mamdani said. "It shouldn't be. That's why we're launching New York City's first-ever Parents' Night Out, so that parents can get a little time on their own to catch a movie, run errands or go on a date without worrying about who will take care of the kids - or how much it will cost. Making New York City more affordable isn’t just about lowering costs, it’s about giving people back their time. This administration is committed to making it easier to raise a family in the greatest city in the world.”

The programming for the children includes "supervised games, sports and fitness activities, arts and crafts, media education programs and nature exploration," and the program will be led by Urban Park Rangers, trained NYC Parks staff." It's got a marketing aspect, too, as the program is "designed to showcase the wide range of engaging recreational programs NYC Parks offers year-round. Dinner will be provided for all participants."

The program will be open to families with kids who are ages 6 to 13, and the children will be watched at designated city recreation centers. Officials said that the program is designed to give parents a break from taking care of their kids for a night out on Sunday, August 16. The first round is a pilot program. The move from the Mamdani administration adds onto the number of taxpayer-funded programs the New York City mayor has wanted to implement, including free public transportation, government-run grocery stores, and others.
