Mamdani tells illegal aliens how to avoid ICE detainment as NYC operations continue

Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani released a video Sunday advising illegal immigrants on how to respond to ICE encounters, prompting criticism as New York City prepares for a likely clash with the Trump administration over immigration.

Mamdani referenced an ICE operation in Chinatown last weekend, during which protesters blocked officers from leaving a parking garage. It was the second large-scale action in the area in six weeks. Nine illegal immigrants were arrested during earlier October raids.

In the video, posted to X, Mamdani said he intends to “protect the rights of every single New Yorker,” including “the more than 3 million immigrants who call this city their home.” He told viewers that ICE “cannot enter into private spaces like your home, school, or private area of your workplace without a judicial warrant signed by a judge,” displaying an example of such a warrant. He advised individuals to state “I do not consent to entry” and keep doors closed if presented with administrative paperwork instead.

Mamdani said people have the right to remain silent and may ask, “Am I free to go?” if they believe they are being detained. He also noted that filming ICE activity is permitted as long as it does not interfere with an arrest. “New Yorkers have a constitutional right to protest,” he added.

The guidance drew criticism online from several commentators who accused the mayor-elect of encouraging noncompliance with federal immigration law. “Aiding abetting and advising criminals,” one user wrote in response to the video.

Mamdani met with President Trump at the White House last month in a meeting that went better than many had assumed.
