Maryland mother allegedly drowns 3-month-old baby in bathtub in Chevy Chase home: police

A Montgomery County mother is accused of drowning her three-month-old daughter while bathing her at their Chevy Chase home on Sunday, according to the Montgomery County Police Department.

Mackenzie Rose Colgan, 37, was arrested after police heard from the victim's father that Colgan drowned their daughter inside a residence on the 7300 block of Summit Avenue at around 12:10 p.m.

Once police arrived, they found and transported the baby to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, officials said. Colgan was charged with first-degree murder.

According to court documents, Colgan took the baby from family members who were sitting in the living room around 11:40 a.m. and told them she was going to bathe the baby. About 20 minutes later, she allegedly came back downstairs and told the baby's father that the baby was dead. The father ran upstairs and found the baby in the bathtub unresponsive.

She was charged with first-degree murder.

Colgan was originally supposed to appear in court for a bond hearing on Monday. However, the hearing was postponed so that she could undergo a mental health evaluation.
