Masks will be required at Pittsburgh Public Schools beginning Friday

( Post Millennial )

Pittsburgh Public Schools announced Thursday night that they are requiring masks again beginning Friday.

The district made the announcement in a Facebook post which read, "Allegheny County has reached the MEDIUM COVID-19 Community Level. Effective tomorrow, Friday, May 13, 2022, all students, employees, and visitors are required to wear a mask while inside a school or district facility. #PPSStayInformed"

The majority of parents and community members on the thread slammed the decision. Only a few hours earlier, Allgheny County was at the LOW Community Level.

According to a health and safety plan approved by the school board last month, masks are required in all of the district’s facilities when Allegheny County's COVID-19 community level is "medium" or "high." Masks are optional when the community level is "low."

The new policy went into effect on April 29.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention previously updated its guidelines using a tool called "Community Levels" ? low, medium or high. Levels are determined by hospital beds in use, hospital admissions and the total number of new COVID cases in an area.

On Thursday, the CDC reported that the community level in Allegheny County has risen from "low" to "medium."
