The Odessa Police Department has arrested a woman in connection with a murder investigation after an infant was found dead in a toilet earlier this year. 22-year-old Yanira Prado has been charged with Capital Murder.
According to OPD, on October 9, investigators responded to a home in the 2900 block of W 6th Street and found a recently born infant in the toilet. The baby’s mother was identified as Prado and Prado was taken to the hospital for follow-up care.
During the subsequent investigation, investigators found that several aspects of the death raised suspicion. However, a complete autopsy was necessary before any conclusions could be drawn.
On December 6, investigators received the official autopsy findings that revealed that the infant was born at full term. Evidence from the scene, as well as the autopsy results, revealed that the infant was born alive and was breathing. The cause of death was determined to be due to asphyxia.
The death investigation was then upgraded to a homicide investigation and Prado was arrested without further incident and booked into the Ector County Law Enforcement Center on Friday afternoon.
