Over 400 arrested in Newport Beach as July Fourth celebrations turn chaotic with looting, fires, and street violence in multiple cities

California’s July Fourth celebrations turned chaotic in parts of the state as multiple cities dealt with reports of looting, fires, and aggressive street disorder that forced police into crowd control measures, including riding on horseback.

What is typically a night of fireworks and community gatherings instead erupted in several areas into scenes of unrest. Videos circulating from the night showed large groups breaking into retail stores, carrying merchandise out en masse while police attempted to regain control of the situation. The worst of much of the violence occurred in Newport Beach where Independence Day crowds choked out traffic and clashed with police as disorder spread near the pier. Over 400 arrests were made.

Videos taken from Newport Beach showed roves of people surrounding police, who were then pelted with bottles and trash before tensions spilled over into fights among the crowds themselves. Footage from the area also shows the aftermath of a Pavilions grocery store being looted, with items scattered across the parking lot while groups lingered outside the business.

The New York Post reports that many of the individuals involved in the unrest were not local to Newport Beach, adding another layer to the ongoing investigations into the night’s events.

Los Angeles also experienced significant disruption on Independence Day as firefighters responded to multiple blazes Saturday evening sparked in part by illegal fireworks. The Los Angeles Fire Department reported dispatching more than 60 firefighters to a commercial building in the Harbor Gateway neighborhood after reports of a fire breaking out at the site.

Authorities continue to assess the overall damage, with multiple agencies reviewing surveillance footage and social media video to identify those involved in the looting and disorder, per The New York Post.
