A Portland Antifa extremist has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for launching an arson attack on the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in the southwest waterfront. Trenten Edward Barker, 34, of Portland, Ore., attempted to burn the building down during an anti-ICE riot on June 11, 2025.

US District Court Judge Adrienne Nelson sentenced Barker on March 5 to 18 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release. He has also been ordered to pay more than $8,800 in restitution, court records show. Barker pleaded guilty to arson of a federal building in November 2025.

According to an FBI affidavit, Barker was among a group of protesters who erected a barricade in front of the ICE facility gate. The defendant was captured on surveillance video igniting a flare and throwing it onto the barricade consisting of objects and debris, resulting in a large fire.

The fire caused significant damage to the building's security system and the metal gate that restricts ingress and egress into the facility, according to court documents. Barker was wearing Antifa's black bloc militant uniform at the time of the attack.

The Oregon US Attorney's Office detailed the severity of the crime, telling the Court that Barker displayed a complete disregard for human life, as federal officers and other personnel were inside the building at the time. Therefore, Barker's actions, the prosecutor said, warranted "a significant custodial sentence."

"The nature and circumstances of this offense demonstrate an exceptional level of danger," said Assistant US Attorney Kate Rochat in a sentencing memorandum. "By setting fire to an occupied government structure, the defendant endangered not only federal property, but also every person inside of the building, any first responders or emergency personnel, and other protesters. The danger was compounded by the presence of a hostile crowd surrounding the facility at the time the defendant committed the offense."

"This volatile environment," the prosecutor continued, "increased the risk that the evacuation points of the building would be blocked or obstructed, emergency responders delayed, and an otherwise controllable situation turned into a tragedy. The defendant's conduct, therefore, threatened not only human life but also the safe functioning of a federal function charged with serving the public."

Barker asked Judge Nelson for a lenient sentence, claiming that he had acted out of impulse due to anger stemming from the Trump administration's enhanced immigration enforcement efforts. His defense attorney, Peyton Lee, requested that the judge impose a sentence of time served.

The US Attorney's Office rejected Barker's request for no jail time, saying, "The defendant may claim to have acted impulsively, but his behavior was not impassioned symbolic protest; it was unacceptable recklessness, callous indifference to human life, and a blatant disregard for the rule of law."

While the offense is punishable by up to 20 years in prison, the judge gave him the lowest-level sentence offered on the sentencing scale. Barker had no prior criminal history before this conviction.

Since June 2025, the Portland ICE facility has been the site of clashes between federal officers and anti-ICE agitators, many of whom have a nexus to the Antifa terrorist organization. The facility has been the target of violent breaches and arson attacks, resulting in hundreds of arrests. More than 30 protesters have received serious federal charges; some of them are facing decades in prison. Many have already been convicted.

Barker is the first of the defendants to be sentenced to federal prison. Antifa-affiliated anti-ICE groups reacted to his sentencing on Friday, claiming Barker is a "political prisoner."

"All across the country, federal officers continue to violently enforce this administration's fascist agenda. Masked agents kill people in the streets. The government disappears our neighbors into concentration camps. And they do this with no end in sight. With impunity," PDX Anti-Repression Committee wrote on Instagram. "People who express dissent and stand up to fight back for their neighbors are targeted, brutalized, and imprisoned. Trenten is no different."

Additionally, Barker launched a GoFundMe to raise money for his restitution in violation of the website's policies. He did not detail his crimes and claimed that he was simply "protesting."

Barker has been ordered to report to federal custody by April 30 at 2 pm.
