Rep. Al Green was escorted out of the U.S. Capitol chamber Tuesday night after interrupting President Donald Trump’s joint congressional address.
The Texas Democrat stood and interrupted Trump at the start of the speech as he started speaking, “You don’t have a mandate,” Green began before Republicans stood and drowned him out with jeers and a chant of “USA.” House Speaker Mike Johnson warned the congressman before calling for him to be removed.
“Members are directed to uphold and maintain the quorum in the House and to cease any further disruptions. That’s your warning,” Johnson told the room before addressing the Texas Democrat. “Mr. Green, take your seat. Take your seat, sir.”
Green refused to sit down, leading to Johnson’s decision to order his removal.
“Members continue to engage in willful and concerted disruption of proper decorum. The Chair now directs the Sergeant at Arms to restore order, remove this gentleman from The Chamber,” Johnson said inciting loud cheers from the GOP. “You members are directed to uphold and maintain the quorum in the House. Mr. President, you may continue.” As guards removed him, House Republicans sang, “Hey, hey, hey, goodbye.”
What did Al Green say to Trump?
Following his removal from the chamber, Green told reporters he tried telling Trump he had “no mandate to cut Medicaid,” according to Bloomberg.
“I’m also working on my articles of impeachment,” Green told reporters.
Who is Rep. Al Green?
Rep. Al Green is a Texas Democrat who has served in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2005, serving the state’s ninth congressional district.
Green, a New Orleans native, has spent more than two decades representing the district, which includes the southwestern part of the Greater Houston area. He was reelected last November after running unopposed.
Last week, Green criticized Trump for voting against a United Nations resolution that blamed Russia for invading Ukraine.
Trump paused military aid to Ukraine on Monday following last week’s confrontation with the nation’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House, further widening a division between the two countries over how to end a three-year war with Russia.
Democrats yell at Marjorie Taylor Greene to remove MAGA hat
Some Democrats yelled “Take your hat off” to Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., wearing a red Make America Great Again hat on the floor, which is against House rules.
Other House members held black signs with white letters reading: “Save Medicaid,” “Musk Steals” and “Protect Veterans.” The other side of the sign says “FALSE.”
