The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed early Tuesday after being hit by a container ship — sending cars plunging into the water in what was quickly declared a mass-casualty event.
One body has been recovered from the water, a city councilwoman told CNN late afternoon.
Six workers were presumed dead Tuesday evening after the catastrophic collapse at Francis Scott Key Bridge, said Jeff Pritzker, executive vice president at Brawner Builders, to The Baltimore Sun.
Two people have been rescued, authorities said during a mid-morning press conference.
Speaking for just a few minutes this afternoon, President Biden promised federal funds “to pay for the entire cost of reconstructing” the bridge, and said he would visit Baltimore “as soon as I can.”
