Sonic manager shot, killed after confronting customer about counterfeit bills in Texas

A night manager at a Sonic Drive-In in San Antonio, Texas, was tragically shot and killed following an altercation with two female customers involving counterfeit bills last Sunday. Daniel Shrewsbury, aged 33, who was on duty at the time, confronted the customers around 9:30 pm. One of the customers allegedly shot Shrewsbury during the confrontation. The San Antonio Police Department has released photos of the individuals involved but has not made any arrests or disclosed the suspects' identities. According to KSAT, Shrewsbury's family believes the argument began when the customers attempted to use counterfeit money to purchase food.

“Once my brother went out there and confronted them about the fake money, he got shot,” said Jojo Shrewsbury, Daniel's brother. Jojo described his older brother, who was just days away from celebrating his 34th birthday, as a "role model" to him and many others. "He’s not just known as a Sonic employee. He’s more than that," Jojo shared with KSAT, fighting back tears.

A witness who was in the drive-through at the time of the incident recounted hearing three shots, saying, “I was on my phone sitting in line. And I heard what sounded like at first, the first gunshot. But didn’t really register that that’s what it was.”

“Then I heard two additional gunshots after that and my mind went, ‘OK, something is happening here.’ Tried to get out of there, essentially, I was scared,” the witness explained to KENS5. The witness also mentioned the employee's reaction: “Poor girl, I feel for her.

She came up and asked me if I still wanted my order. That an employee had been shot.

And she just had a complete look of shock on her face. And I just said, ‘No, no, I’m fine, I’m just trying to get out of here.’”

Daniel’s stepfather, Dominic Cofield, expressed his sorrow and anger, saying, “(The killer) took somebody from the community, like the people at his job, the regulars that go there. He didn’t deserve this ‘cause, like they said, he was a good kid.”
