A 23-year-old man was stabbed at the Walmart store on Alpine Ave. in Comstock Park just after 9 p.m. Friday night, according to authorities.

Lt. Eric Brunner with the Kent County Sheriff's Office said they believe the attack was unprovoked and that the suspect and victim did not know each other.

The victim was stabbed multiple times, according to Brunner. After the stabbing, Brunner said the suspect attempted to run out of the store and was struck by a bystander's car, who Brunner said was "potentially attempting to stop him."

"As the sheriff will often say, communities keep communities safe," said Brunner. "There's not enough of us always to do the job, so having people here take action when they did helped bring this to resolution and it was a very dangerous situation."

The suspect was then apprehended by bystanders in the parking lot. Brunner said police then arrived quickly to take the 29-year-old suspect into custody.

Brunner said the victim was hospitalized but is in stable condition.

The incident at the Alpine Ave. Walmart comes almost a week after a stabbing attack at a Walmart in Traverse City. 11 people were stabbed during that incident.

Brunner said he can't speak to whether the attack was inspired by or related to the recent stabbing attack in Traverse City, but said he knows this is obviously concerning to the community.

"We have to keep all options open to explore this," said Brunner. "I think everyone in our community is thinking the same thing, and as law enforcement we want to provide as many answers as we can to you, but we can't draw any conclusions."

Brunner said that the Kent County Sheriff's Office would be continuing to investigate the incident and what led up to the stabbing.
