Suspect in Fort Stewart shooting is Army sergeant, 5 soldiers injured

Georgia’s Fort Stewart went into lockdown on Wednesday over what officials said was an "active shooter incident" in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area. Per CNN, a law enforcement official said that the suspect is an Army sergeant.

"Lockdown your facility immediately, stay inside, close and lock all windows and doors. Keep telephone lines open and report accountability to your leadership," a post to the Fort Stewart Hunter Army Airfield's Facebook page stated.

At around 12:30 pm, an update from the base stated that five soldiers were shot during the incident in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area. They were treated on site and were transported for further treatment to Winn Army Community Hospital. "There is no active threat to the community," the base said.

Law enforcement had been dispatched to the base at 10:56 am, and the base was placed on lockdown at 11:04 am. The shooter was taken into custody at 11:35 am, and the lockdown in the main cantonment area was lifted at 12:10 pm. The lockdown in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team complex was later lifted. Per CNN, a law enforcement official said that the suspect is an Army Sergeant.

The FBI’s Atlanta office said that it is "aware of the incident at Fort Stewart and is coordinating with Army Criminal Investigation Division for any assistance that might be needed."

"As we remain in close contact with law enforcement on the ground, Marty, the girls, and I are saddened by today’s tragedy at Ft. Stewart. We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers, and we ask that Georgians everywhere do the same," Governor Brian Kemp wrote.
