Three suspects arrested after 1 dead, at least 22 shot at Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl parade: police

The Kansas City Police Department has taken three people into custody after a deadly shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl parade on Wednesday, which left one person dead and at least 22 others injured.

The police department updated the public on the incident in a press briefing and said that it remains an active investigation. Authorities did not provide additional information on the three detained individuals.

The deceased individual has not yet been identified and authorities are working on making an identification in order to notify the family.

Chaos unfolded around 3 pm near Union Station in Kansas City, Missouri, after multiple gunmen fired shots during the parade celebration to honor the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl victory over the San Franciso 49ers.

Kansas City Police immediately informed the public to vacate the area.

"Shots have been fired around Union Station. Please leave the area," the department wrote on X. "Shots were fired west of Union Station near the garage and multiple people were struck."

Video footage taken during the parade shows law enforcement officers running into Union Station while parade participants scurry out of the location.

A witness described the incident to Sam McDowell, a sports columnist for the Kansas City Star, and said: "I thought it was fireworks. It sounded like a ton of very rapid succession very quick shots. I'd say 15 to 20 in a very short amount of time."

"A lot of people scattered in confusion," the witness said.

Video footage emerged of KC Chiefs fans allegedly subduing one of the shooters. A group can be seen running towards a person and then tackling them to the ground. Law enforcement said during the press briefing that they are working to determine if the individual is one of the suspects involved in the shooting.
