The State Department has designated multiple Antifa groups in Europe as foreign terrorist organizations. This will be the first time that Antifa groups will formally be designated as a foreign terrorist organization. The designation will be applied to multiple major Antifa cells in different European countries.

The designation was made official on Thursday, per journalist Julio Rosas, who was told by a State Department spokesman, “The anarchists, Marxists, and violent extremists of Antifa have waged a terror campaign in the United States and across the Western world for decades, carrying out bombings, beatings, shootings, and riots in service of their extreme agenda. The State Department is committed to identifying and dismantling these terror networks that conspire to ruthlessly suppress the will of the people and violently undermine the very foundations of the United States and Western Civilization.”

The designation comes after Antifa-linked militants also targeted a Turning Point USA event taking place at UC Berkeley in California with violence earlier this week. Flares were thrown as well as smoke bombs at attendees, and one man was also bloodied after had his necklace allegedly stolen by a far-left rioter, who repeatedly punched the TPUSA attendee in the face, according to police charges.

According to Fox News, the Trump administration will apply the foreign terrorist designation to four Antifa cells that are active in Europe, including in Germany, Italy, as well as Greece. These groups have been accused of carrying out bombings, shootings, and other politically motivated attacks.

The designation also requires US financial institutions to freeze assets linked to the group, much like other foreign terrorist organizations. The Trump administration has also designated Antifa as a Specifically Designated Global Terrorist organization.

One of the Antifa cells in Germany, Antifa Ost, has been linked to attacks between 2018 and 2023. The Hungarian government previously designated the group as a terror organization after 9 Antifa members assaulted people in Budapest with hammers, batons, and pepper spray in 2023.
