Two people are dead after a driver plowed a truck through a number of people gathered at a youth soccer game in Wichita, Kansas. Several were also injured in the incident, police said.

The police department described the event as a mass casualty incident. "WPD is investigating a mass casualty incident involving a vehicle. There is no further ongoing threat at this time. We will provide further updates when we have additional information," the police said.

The driver of the vehicle is in custody. Aaron Moses of the Wichita Police Department told reporters that there have been a number of others that were injured in the incident. "This is a tragedy," Moses added.

"We ask that you keep all individuals and families affected in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time," the city of Wichita said in a statement. “Please avoid the complex to allow emergency personnel to carry out their work. Updates regarding future events will be shared as information becomes available.”

“I’m heartbroken by reports of a tragic incident at Stryker Sports Complex. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected, especially the children and families involved,” the Wichita Mayor Lily Wu said. “First responders are on the scene, and I ask everyone please avoid the area while they work. Please keep these families in your prayers. More information will be shared as it becomes available.”

A witness told 12 News that a “black pickup truck came plowing through the youth soccer fields hitting multiple people before stopping 100-200 yards down the fields. Dozens of emergency responders on scene giving CPR and rendering aid to victims.”
