US sees 521 attacks on Catholic churches since May 2020: CatholicVote

There have been over 500 attacks on Catholic churches since May 2020, with one of the latest being the shooting that took place in Minnesota this past week, when a trans shooter set out to massacre children at the Annunciation Catholic church in Minneapolis. Two children died in the attack, while 18 others were injured.

According to CatholicVote, there have been a total of 521 Catholic churches attacked since May 2020. 355 of those attacks have been after the Supreme Court leak of the Dobbs decision, and 41 of those attacks have taken place in 2025.

"While a handful of the attacks have included thefts, the vast majority have only involved property destruction, indicating that the primary motive is not material gain," CatholicVote stated, indicating that the attacks have not been for any monetary gain on the part of the attackers, but that they are simply targeting the Catholic Church.

The attacks have taken place in 43 states as well as Washington, DC. The states with the most attacks have been California (69), New York (60), Pennsylvania (36), Texas (26), Florida (23), New Jersey (20), Ohio (18), Oregon (18), Colorado (17), and Massachusetts (16), the religious organization said.

Only around 30 percent of the cases have evidence that arrests took place, according to CatholicVote. “The vandalism we are seeing today is quickly rising to levels that haven’t been seen since the late 1800’s and early 1900’s from organized groups such as the Know-Nothings and the Ku Klux Klan,” CatholicVote president Brian Burch said.

The organization pointed at the Biden administration, saying that during the four years he was president, there was little action to stop the acts of domestic terrorism. There was a surge in attacks on Catholic churches following the Dobbs decision, overturning Roe v Wade. 2020 had 60 attacks, 2021 had 83, that number jumped to 143 in 2022, 108 in 2023, 86 in 2024, and 41 so far in 2025.
