Why Did Diabetes Greatly Increase in 1997?

If you notice in the CDC's graph below, the percentage and actual diabetes diagnoses in the 50s were quite low. I do not recall ever knowing anyone with diabetes back then, but I didn't know everyone so of course there were some. But, it just shows how rare that was, just like autism was unheard of by most back then; yet it is very high now also. Even up to the 70s, diabetes was rare and by then I knew 2 people with it. But look at the graph and notice in around 1995 or 1996 something happened, it took a dive. However, in 1997 the diagnoses jumped way up and kept going even though in 1995 or 1996 it went way down. Now days it seems I know more people with diabetes than not. Why is that?

Well, we know diabetes is NOT from consuming too much sugar, although sugar consumption is not good if you have diabetes. Heck, sugar consumption is not good anyway. Diabetes occurs when the pancreas delivers too much insulin into the body that one gets diabetes. So, what could happen to the bodies of our population, that suddenly caused an increase in our pancreas going haywire?

Of course I have a thought, you know me, I always have an opinion. However, I will not offer it now. I just put it here for you to think about. I bet you we are on the same page.
