CHOOSE FREEDOM
By: Linda Kirby/WGON

Many people have trouble forgiving those who have wronged them. It is not an easy thing to do, and forgiving something truly nightmarish seems impossible. Yet, Jesus commanded us to forgive. He would not tell us to do something that wasn't good for us or that was impossible for us to do. Matthew 18:21-35 shows God's view on forgiveness. Peter came to Jesus and asked Him how often he should forgive someone who sins against him. Peter suggested seven times; but the Lord responded, "I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven." Forgiveness is usually an act that our emotions rail against; however, forgiving someone is an act of our will. We must choose to release those we have under our judgment and give them to God, Who is faithful to render justice. It can feel as though we are saying that what they did was OK. That is not what forgiveness means. Forgiveness is giving them to God -- they will answer to Him for their wrongdoings. Even the world has come to recognize that forgiving others is healing to the mind, emotions, and even the body. It may take some time for our emotions to catch up with our decision, but we must choose forgiveness and keep forgiving! Be obedient to the Lord, be brave and step out into His freedom by forgiving others from the heart. He will help us and we will be grateful for the eventual freedom we will enjoy.
