HAVE YOU LOST YOUR FIRST LOVE

Rev. 2:4b: “Because thou hast left thy first love...”this speaks of the church of Ephesus who did most things right except they left their first love. What does this mean? Matthew Henry’s commentary of this says, “...Surely this mention in Scripture, of Christians forsaking their first love, reproves those who speak of it with carelessness, and thus try to excuse indifference and sloth in themselves and others; our Saviour considers this indifference as sinful. They must repent….” He is saying here that Christians tend to become careless in their expression of love for Christ, and others. Christians try to excuse their lack of enthusiasm for Jesus as they once did. They tend to be so relaxed in their walk that they actually step off the path Jesus has laid out for them. In their minds, it’s not a problem. As we see in this scripture, it’s a big problems Rev.2: 5 : Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent. When Christians get into that mode that the things they are doing wrong are okay, they start to excuse those same offenses of others just to make themselves feel better. The next thing we know, there is no one walking the straight path to reprove those brothers and sisters who are straying. Our churches today are filled with this example of how bad things can get. The churches have gone with the world. It started out a little here and a little there and now they are in full apostasy. Don’t be the Ephesus church. Repent. The rapture is so near and we sure don’t want to have to answer for this at the Bema seat.
