OUR “BUT GOD” MOMENTS

By: Linda Kirby/WGON

Psalm 76 was written by Asaph and was believed to be in celebration of their defeat of the greatly feared Assyrian army. As you may recall in 2 Kings 18, we read about how horrible the Assyrian army was. They were so feared that when word came that the army was nearing a city, the city would just surrender. They felt it better to be slaves than to suffer the horrific torture of the Assyrians. The Israeli king, Hezekiah, however, was a man of God. He trusted in God more than his military, more than weapons, or his advisors who were advising him to surrender. The king trusted in God and God came through for him. If you recall, God used one angel to come into the Assyrian camp overnight and killed nearly everyone there. The few that were left, fled. Leaving a few alive was on purpose, to spread the word that the God of Israel was an awesome God! So, this Psalm is celebrating their awesome God. The lesson is that when things get very hard -- I mean so hard you can’t see a way out -- it then becomes a “But God” moment. When things get “impossible”, it gives God the opportunity to show how awesome He truly is. Each of us have events in our lives that are our own “Assyrian moments” … but God. God allows things to get really bad sometimes so we will see just how awesome He truly is. We each have our own battles: some in health, some in finance, some in relationships; but to us, each is our Assyrian moment. We should all be like King Hezekiah and have complete faith that God will take care of the Assyrian in our lives. We won’t have to raise a finger because this is a job God wants to do without our help. This is how God shows us He is God. We need to place our faith in Him, and, like He did for King Hezekiah, He will do for us.
