Inspirational: The First Prophecy and the First Prophetic Act

by Linda Kirby/WGON 10.5.26
When people talk about the first prophecy in the Bible, they usually point to Genesis 3:15. It’s the moment God speaks into the darkness of the Fall and declares that the Seed of the woman will one day crush the serpent’s head. It is the first spoken promise of redemption — a verbal prophecy of a coming Savior.
But tucked just a few verses later is something just as powerful, and to me, just as prophetic. In Genesis 3:21, God makes coats of skin and clothes Adam and Eve. It is the first prophetic act in Scripture — a silent sermon preached through action instead of words.
Those skins were more than garments. They were the first picture of the gospel.
In Eden, God covered humanity with the skin of an innocent substitute. Blood was shed. A life was taken. Shame was covered. And God Himself provided the covering. It was the shadow of something greater — a whisper of Calvary spoken through the hands of God.
Years later, on Mount Moriah, Abraham walked with his son Isaac toward an altar. Isaac noticed the fire and the wood but asked the question every human heart has asked since Eden: “Where is the lamb?” Abraham answered with a line that carried eternity inside it: “God will provide Himself a lamb.”
On that mountain, God revealed the next step in the pattern. He would not only provide a sacrifice — He would be the sacrifice.
And then, in the fullness of time, on Calvary, the promise became a Person. Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, took the place of sinners and bore the weight of the world’s shame. The covering in the garden was only the shadow. The cross was the substance.
From the very beginning, God wasn’t just preparing a sacrifice. He was preparing Himself to be the sacrifice.
This is the story written into the fabric of Scripture — from Eden’s covering, to Moriah’s promise, to Calvary’s fulfillment. A God who steps into our shame, provides our covering, and becomes our Lamb.
And all of it began with a prophecy spoken… and a prophecy acted out by the hands of God.
