TONGUE OF FIRE

Often we must be reminded to watch our tongue, because in today’s world, there’s so much scoffing going on and we can easily "get into the flesh." Before you know it, our tongues are spreading fire! “Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell” (James 3:5-6). Whether in personal conversation or posting online, people are affected by our words. We can forget that a great many people read our online comments. Someone who is sitting on the fence about coming to Christ, may be offended over what we have said to them or written on the internet. Our comments might cause them to stumble and so defame our Lord. Our fiery tongue can push searching people away from the Gospel. We should be concerned that our words could lose souls -- which would certainly please the adversary. Let’s use our words to lead people to Jesus, not to chase them away. "Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one" (Colossians 4:6). We are going home very soon and we will be at the Bema seat giving an account for that fire in our mouth. Let’s stay alert, walk in the Spirit instead of the flesh, and use that fire for Christ!
