Inspirational: When You Twist Scripture, You’re Misquoting God

I’ve always wondered why I get so upset when I hear someone twist Scripture to fit their own interpretation. It’s not irritation — it’s something deeper. As I got older and closer to Jesus, I finally understood why: because I finally understood what Scripture actually is.
Let me put it in everyday terms. When you text your family, they know it’s you talking to them. It’s not a book, not a technical document, not an ancient artifact. It’s you, speaking directly to them — even though they can’t hear your voice.
That’s exactly what Scripture is.
We say scripture is alive, then that means, It’s not a “book.”
It’s not an ancient document.
It’s God speaking — as clearly as if He were texting you.
2 Timothy 3:16 — “All Scripture is God‑breathed…”
2 Peter 1:21 — “Men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.”
So when someone twists Scripture, even a little, it’s the same thing as twisting someone’s words in a conversation.
You know how it feels when someone says,
“So what you’re saying is…”
and then completely misrepresents what you actually said?
That’s exactly what people do to God when they force Scripture to fit their ideology, their beliefs, or their agenda.
I can almost hear God saying,
“NO — I did not say that. You’re not listening to Me.”
We see politicians do this.
We see news anchors do this.
We see interviewers do this.
And it drives us crazy.
So why wouldn’t it upset us even more when someone does it to God?
This is why I react so strongly when Scripture is twisted.
Because they’re not just misinterpreting a verse —
they’re claiming God said something He never said.
They’re using the Bible to make their point, not God’s point.
Once I understood that, everything made sense.
My reaction wasn’t overblown — it was loyalty.
Because when someone says,
“So God is saying…”
and then proceeds to twist His words,
that’s a red flag for me.
I’ve watched preachers, teachers, and Christians in general do this without even realizing it. They forget that the text they’re reading is not a suggestion, not a commentary, not a theological playground.
It is God speaking.
Proverbs 30:5–6 — “Every word of God proves true… Do not add to His words, or He will rebuke you and prove you a liar.”
Deuteronomy 4:2 — “You shall not add to the word… nor take from it.”
Think about that the next time someone tries to “correct” God.
Because that’s exactly what they’re doing.
They’re not making a mistake.
They’re not offering a harmless opinion.
They’re not “seeing it differently.”
They are:
• misrepresenting Him
• putting words in His mouth
• altering His message
• speaking over Him
And Scripture warns about that:
Revelation 22:18–19 — If anyone adds to these words, God will add to him the plagues… and if anyone takes away, God will take away his share…”
Be careful correcting God.
Because how can a mere human correct the Almighty?
It’s folly.
It’s foolishness.
It’s vanity.
