Pro-Palestinian protesters storm barricades, face off with NYPD outside of Met Gala

Pro-Palestine protesters in New York City have breached the barricades outside the Met Gala as the latest protest effort against the Jewish state of Israel. Over 1,000 protesters attempted to make their way to the Met on 86th and 5th Avenue on the edge of Central Park. At least a dozen arrests were made.

"Disclose, divest, we will not stop, we will not rest," they chanted. Officers diverted the protesters into Central Park and prevented them from getting up close to the Met and the Hollywood celebs.

The anti-Israel protesters, waving Palestinian flags and sporting keffiyeh face coverings, were seen marching through Manhattan on Monday toward the Met Gala, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. New York Police Department officers warned protesters who were blocking traffic and being unruly that they could be arrested.

The march was organized by the group Within Our Lifetime, who called for a “Day of Rage” to protest as the Met Gala took place, according to a report by the New York Post. The protest comes as part of a planned action in which activists met on one side of Manhattan at Hunter College, on 68th and Lexington on the East Side, and at the gates of Columbia Univerity on 116th and Broadway on the West Side.

Video footage posted on X by Oliya Scootercaster shows protesters breaching the barricades near the gala venue and getting into altercations with NYPD officers while chanting “long live the Intifada.”

The Met Gala is an annual bash for celebrities and the wealthy elite. Each year has a theme that attendees are intended to use to construct their their attire. The red carpet for the Met Gala is legendary with the glitterati strutting their stuff for paparazzi. The theme for the Met Gala this year was The Garden of Time, in association with the Met's new exhibit Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.
