John 15:13 — Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

When we think of Memorial Day, we think of the brave men and women who willingly laid down their lives to protect us. Their sacrifice is sacred, and we honor them with the deepest gratitude our hearts can hold.

But the very first Memorial Day happened long before our nation existed.

Two thousand years ago, Jesus Christ set the example. He said, “Ye are my friends…” (John 15:14a), and then He proved it by going to the cross — willingly,

knowingly, lovingly — to save us from certain death and eternal separation from God. His sacrifice was not forced. It was chosen.

Since that day, countless sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, have followed that same pattern of love: giving their lives so others might live. We honor them every year. We speak their names. We remember their courage.

Yet the world often forgets the first and greatest sacrifice — the One that opened the door to eternal life.

As Christians, we celebrate Jesus’ sacrifice on Easter, but His light is not meant for one day a year. His love is meant to shine daily through us.

So let’s lift our lights high — not just on Easter, not just on Memorial Day — but every day. Let the world see the Savior who laid down His life for His friends… and called us His friends.
