THE SHADOW OF DEATH
excerpt from Pastor David Jeremiah

For many people, worry, anxiety, and fear are constant companions: fear of death, fear of danger, fear of disease. And too often, these fears are crippling, keeping us from the life God has called us to live. Ps. 23:4: “Yea tho I walk THROUGH the valley of the shadow of death.” Death is not a place where we stay. We walk through it to our final place. It could be heaven if you’ve taken Christ as your Savior, or it could be hell if you reject Him. But, death itself is merely a separation of your soul from your body. The “shadow of death” shows us that the shadow is just a reflection of death. As Pastor Donald Grey Barnhouse once said to his kids, when a truck passed by them a shadow passed over them. He asked his kids if they would rather be hit by that truck or by it’s shadow. The kids said the shadow of course. Christ got hit by that truck so we only get the shadow. The only reason to be scared of death is if you have rejected Jesus. Because from that point on, you will experience the second death throughout eternity. (Rev. 21:8) But, if you belong to Jesus, we are told in Ps. 16:11: “Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.” So, we must live our lives to the fullest while we are here. Our time on this earth is short but we go on to live forever with Jesus. As Jesus told us in John 14:19b: “…because I live, you will live also.”
