Magnitude-6.9 quake strikes off coast of Mexico, south of Cabo San Lucas



MEXICO (KRON) — A magnitude-6.9 earthquake struck in the waters of the Pacific coast a early Thursday south of Mexico’s popular destination port Cabo San Lucas.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake struck at 10:07 a.m. about 146 miles southwest of Tomatlan.

“The area west of the Gulf of California, including Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula, is moving northwestward with the Pacific plate at about 50 mm per year,” according to the USGS.

There have been no reports of damage at this time and no threat of a tsunami.

“Based on all available data a destructive pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii,” said the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
